Shift
Shift is a verb that embodies change. A vehicle that has shifted gears is still moving forward, but a change has occurred that allows for acceleration (something I know a little too much about). Similarly, the shift key on your keyboard changes the output of a lower-case letter to a more intense, bolder, upper case letter that stands out amongst the other letters in a word. A capitalized letter, one that has been shifted, allows for clarity, distinction, and specific use.
Colossians 3 invites the believer to be intentional about shifting one’s focus and setting one’s mind on Christ and His priorities. This reorientation fosters clarity of one’s true purpose and is so pervasive it has the potential to impact every area of your life. If you’re ready to shift, here’s how to get started:
Look up. No disrespect to how you’ve been living, but if you’re sensing the need to change then know that God has something better for you. To “seek the things above” (Colossians 3:1) is to begin to discover who you really are and the purpose you have been destined to fulfill in this season of your life.
Change Up. There is a higher principle that governs flying versus walking. Flight is possible because the Law of Aerodynamics trumps the Law of Gravity. Similarly, this shift in higher living requires grace, not works. Romans 8:2 says, “The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.” The spirit-led life is not about lawlessness; it’s about living by a higher law. It’s essentially living FROM a place of value, worth, and strength, rather than living FOR it.
Step Up. Warning: This new life may ruffle some feathers. We tend to hype up change without fully acknowledging that it is not always welcomed. When you begin to sense resistance, discomfort, or fear on this journey activate faith, which releases the gift of grace sufficient to overcome the barriers to change (Ephesians 2:8).
Change is a part of life. Any living organism changes. Change is something that happens to people. Transition is something that occurs in people. The shift we are discussing begins within. I’m excited for you! Because if you’re reading this, there is clarity, distinction, and purpose awaiting your decision to shift.
What no eye has seen, no ear has heard,
and no human heart has conceived—
God has prepared these things for those who love him. (1 Corinthians 2:9)
